The Bottled Imp – Episode 095
“… if I could banish disease from the human frame and render man invulnerable to aim but a violent death!”

In this Halloween special, The Bottled Imp takes an in-depth look at the gothic classic Frankenstein, Or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley, first published in 1818. The edition we look at is an illustrated version published by Dark Horse Books in 2008. Illustrations are by Berni Wrightson and Introduction by Stephen King.

Mary Shelley travelled through Europe in 1814, stopping in Gernsheim in Germany, which is just ten miles away from Frankenstein Castle, where two centuries before, an alchemist was engaged in experiments. Later Shelly stayed in Geneva in Switzerland where much of the story takes place. Among her friends were her lover and future husband Percy Shelly, Lord Byron and John Polidori.

The weather was terrible that summer so it was suggested they all write horror stories to pass the time. The result for Mary was Frankenstein based on a dream she had about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made.

Little did she know that her novel would still resonate today almost two hundreds years from its first publication and inspire hundreds of adaptations across stage, TV, film and radio, with countless fictional spin offs.

But just why is the story about a student scientist with good intentions who creates a creature so appealing and enduring? Ken takes a detailed look in this Bottled Imp Halloween special. Happy watching and happy Halloween fellow ghouls…
