Here is the Folio Society edition of Mary Shelley’s “The Last Man”. Bound in cloth and blocked in a design by Neil Gower based on the well-known painting; “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog” by the romantic German artist Caspar David Friedrich.

The book was first published in 1826 and it is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel.
It was virtually unknown until a scholarly revival at the beginning of the 1960s.
Quote from the Folio Society website: “Mary Shelley started writing The Last Man two years after the death of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley. It is in part an elegy to the key figures of the Romantic circle, their hopes and ideals.”

Binding and paper:

The book is bound in cloth and blocked in a design containing three colours; gold, light blue and brown. The size is: 9½” × 6¼”.
The paper is of course acid-free neutral, quite thick and very smooth Abbey Wove paper, and it’s printed and bound in the Great Britain.
There are 13 illustrations throughout the book, including the frontispiece, all printed paintings by Caspar David Friedrich.
The binding is smyth-sewn and the head-/tailband is white and black.

Overall, it’s a very pleasant edition, it feels great and the cloth is very neat.

Content:

The book itself is written in a beautiful poetic prose. It is very different to compared to “Frankenstein” and the story is also a tad bit slow.
Shelley’s use of the English language is so calming and sweet; and I really enjoy reading her prose even if it takes a lot longer to read compared to other books.
I recommend reading the introduction by Sarah Hall because it gives some insight to Mary Shelley’s ideas and life, and I also recommend reading a bit about the “Romantic Circle” with Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley and Lord Byron.
