Piper Kerman talks about how excited she is that her book is being adapted for Netflix as an original series and she hopes that the series and her book will get the word out about the lack of educational opportunities and preparation is available in the current jail and prison system. She discusses how those in the correctional system view their responsibilities solely as confinement not rehabilitation and that this means that most people when they get out have little or no options in terms of finding legitimate work. According to Piper it is too late to work on being prepared for reentering the work force when you leave the prison gate. She believes that being able to find gainful employment so that one can become a contributing member of society should happen when they first enter the prison system.
