I didn't really like this one very much. I agree that this a very important topic and that books like this one are necessary though! I just didn't connect with it, even though I was hooked in the beginning.

Karen Kline says:

You're right about the hype, and the four star rating. (Although I went ahead and gave it five stars.) I found the book hard to read…like a train wreck that I didn't want to watch but I had to watch. I knew where the plot was going, and I seeped with regret for the characters as the story unfolded. I always love your vlog reviews, Rincey. Keep it up!

Natasha D. Lane says:

"Huxtable-esque" lolz loved it.

Life With Lyra Jade says:

You certainly make me want to read this book. Very thorough and colorful review. New subscriber 🙂

Sagenerd says:

At first, I was put off by the relationship the main character had to branded products. I started to feel a sense of artificiality to the portrayal of,"blackness." As the story continued, more of the character's personalities were coming out and a sense of authenticity came into the narrative. I wonder how much the author worried about people attaching to a public concept of what black people do and what they like. The first few chapters compare with the last half of the book feels opposite in this regard.
For people who feel the same as I did at first, I hope they keep reading. I was surprised and impressed by this book for sure.

Kacy Ellis says:

I'm also a bit jaded by the over-hyped YA books, but hearing your praise puts me at ease about this book.  I plan to listen to The Hate U Give in audio format because Bahni Turpin is the narrator, and I trust her to do a beautiful job with the story.  I'm currently listening to Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, and I think this will pair as an excellent follow-up to it.

So excited to read this! I remember hearing about it last spring, too–Angie graduated from my university a year before I went, so my professors were all super thrilled when she got the book deal 🙂

Miz Moffatt says:

Haha, I don't think that's a sign of being jaded—I've definitely been burned by the Overhyped-YA-Machine, but I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! I've heard such amazing things about it, and I'm thinking I need to add it to my TBR. I'm glad to hear there are so many perspectives represented here within the community, and I'm especially interested in learning what Starr's uncle has to say about being on the police force. Great review! Thank you for sharing that!
