The Bottled Imp – Episode 52
The Bottled Imp cracks open the pages of an early George R. R. Martin novel; ‘Fevre Dream’, first published by Poseidon Press in 1982. This edition published in 2011 by Gollancz.

George R.R. Martin is a powerhouse of fantasy writing with his epic fantasy series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, otherwise known as ‘A Game of Thrones’, breaking through into mainstream consciousness and deservedly so.

Having reviewed ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ and a children’s book by the author, ‘The Ice Dragon’, I wanted to explore more of his past writing. Fellow Imp Audry Silva suggested that I try Fevre Dream so I followed her suggestion. Was I to be disappointed?

The story is set in 1857 along the Mississippi River, for Abner Marsh is a steamboat owner and captain. He is down on his luck as his company is losing money. His life looks bleak and without hope until a mysterious offer to fund a new steamboat comes his way. The confident, yet secretive, Joshua York wants Marsh to build the finest steamboat on the river; money no object.

Is this an offer too good to be true? Or an offer too good for Abner Marsh to refuse?
