2020 has been a terrible year. For my holiday reading list this year, I chose five books that I enjoyed—some because they helped me go deeper on a tough issue, others because they offered a welcome change of pace. They are:
• The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander
• Range, by David Epstein
• The Splendid and the Vile, by Erik Larson
• The Spy and the Traitor, by Ben Macintyre
• Breath From Salt, by Bijal P. Trivedi
