JK Rowling Interview on Writing Harry Potter Books and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Since then, J.K. Rowling has written The Casual Vacancy, Cormoran Strike series and The Ickabog.

0:00 – Intro

0:51 – 01 – Read as much as you can. That’s the best way to recognize good and bad writing. In the learning process imitate your favorite writers. Persevere. It’s a career with a lot of knock backs, but the rewards are huge.

(deleted) 02 – Always be writing. Yes J.K. Rowling came up with the idea for Harry Potter instantly while on a train from London to Manchester, but before that she was “writing compulsively” from age 6 to age 25.

2:03 – 03 – Know everything about your story world and generate a lot of material. Only a small portion of that material will find a way to a final screenplay, however, your knowledge of the world will be felt by the reader.

3:49 – 04 – Meticulously plot your story, from beginning to end, from big plot points to minute details. Plotting your story is key to ensuring you have a cohesive, narrative with an effective payoff.

4:44 – 05 – Let the characters come from the deep place inside you. Let them be an exaggeration of you. If you are insecure for example, let your character overcome that insecurity.

5:38 – 06 – Secrecy and mystery are a big part of the excitement of the story. Plan your red herrings carefully and never give too much away. Even in the synopsis, trailers and marketing think how much you want to reveal.

6:26 – 07 – The urge to write often comes from a wish to rearrange the reality you’re in. So draw inspiration from your unhappy teenage years, from your struggles and your hardships.

(deleted) – 08 – You’ve got to believe in your writing. J.K. Rowling would describe herself as a person with not much self-belief. But she believed in one thing in her life – she trusted herself that she can tell a good story.

8:29 – 09 – You will be criticized. But one of the wonderful things about literature, film and music is, that it’s utterly subjective. You can never please everyone, so do your own thing.

9:18 – 10 – Failure will set you free. Failure will strip away all of the inessential and you can begin to direct all your energy into finishing that screenplay or any creative work that you aspire to. Rock bottom can become the solid foundation on which you can rebuild your life.
