Academic book reviews are different from creative book reviews. They tend to follow more rigid rules, both in terms of formatting and structure.

The introduction to an academic review should be used to provide context to the book, a summary of the book’s main argument (the thesis), and your opinion about the merits of the book.

The middle section of a review also tends to follow a common approach. Most commonly these paragraphs either follow the structure of the book under review (chapter by chapter summaries and critiques), or they are topic based, or they are organized according to the reviewer’s main points of criticism/praise.
