Science Fiction novels are often characterized by their imaginative and expressive cover art. Edmund Emshwiller, better known as Ed Emsh or just Emsh was a successful cover artist who had a prolific career during the 1950’s and 60’s.

Emsh made his debut with Galaxy in 1951, and would pen hundreds of covers and interior illustrations by the end of the 60’s when he began to experiment with film and computer animation.

He contributed to countless sci-fi magazines including Amazing Science Fiction Stories, Astounding Science Fiction, If Worlds of Science Fiction and most notably The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction which dominated the market at the time.

Ed studied art at the University of Michigan, in Paris at l’Ecole des Beaux Arts and in New York at the Art Students League. He was a chameleon, excelling in many different styles of sci-fi illustration and painting.

His work adorned the covers of publishers including Pyramid, Double Day & Co., Lancer, Galaxy and Belmont though above all he worked extensively with legendary science fiction publishing house Ace Books. At Ace he contributed to their regular novels and also Ace Doubles, which combined two short stories in a dos a dos binding.

In 1953 Ed won a Hugo Award for Best Cover Artist, and in the 60’s won four more for Best Professional Artist. Emshwiller passed away in 1990 at the age of 65 and in 2007 he was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

Most of the novels and magazines Emsh contributed to range in price from $10 — $60, and at that price anyone can own and appreciate the work of a master.
